Oppression relies on the notion that some people are worth less than others and that once someone has violated the law or caused harm, the best thing to do is to throw them away. We have been taught that imprisonment, torture, and even death can be justified because of harm done or rationalized due to "bad choices", and thus  to blame for their condition. Rarely, if ever, are the victim’s needs met or are the choices of the oppressive system itself and its actors examined. The criminal justice system in the U.S., especially the current for-profit variation, emerged out of conscious efforts to socially control marginalized communities and profiteer off of their bodies and labor. It is a system wrought with fundamental problems that cannot be disconnected from other systems of oppression, and too often, our communities and movements have internalized this carceral logic and replicate it without examination. Manifestations of punitive patterns and the politics of disposability often add to the harm that has already been done while often doing little to repair or prevent harm, keep us safe, or alter patterns of behavior  But it doesn’t have to be like this, and we can build another way. To combat our society’s carceral logic, this, we must move away from understanding “justice” as merely punishment, something "punitive" to understanding justice as taking accountability for one’s actions, repairing harm, and working toward a transformation of self, community, and society. Because carceral solutions are not inevitable. We can build another way.
